Launched in 2010, the Black Apple Youth Project seeks to promote youth social engagement in China's philanthropy world by targeting college students and young white collars. The ultimate goal is to awaken young citizens' self-directed actions and forward-looking responsibilities in social engagement. Six main programs are included, which are National Collegiate Social Entrepreneurship Program, College Student Internship Union Program, Social Interview Program, One-day Executive Assistant Program, Flash Gathering Program, and the Four-season Meetings Program. The interview with Andreas Kirchschläger took place during the BMW Foundation 4th World Young Leaders Forum in Beijing.

India $ China: From INCH to MILES Ni Hao, China. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads on his maiden trip to China May 14-16, the Chinese people can hope to see and hear an Indian leader who uses innovative methods to connect and forge a new narrative of win-win opportunities between the two Asian giants. And the world will be tuning in, keeping a close watch on what goes on between the leaders of Asia’s leading economies. The Modi government has already signalled its desire to build harmonious and multi-pronged relations with China by hosting Chinese president Xi Jinping within months of taking charge. And now, it’s time to pay a return visit. PM Modi’s visit to China promises to be a captivating spectacle, weaving in diplomacy, culture, business and outreach to the Indian diaspora that has made China their home. It will be an aesthetically visual feast when the Chinese leader takes PM Modi around his hometown Xian, also the home of the legendary Terracotta Warriors. Mr Modi’s trip to Xian will have echoes of Mr Xi’s trip to Gandhinagar and Ahamedabad in September last year when the Indian leader hosted the Chinese leader and his elegant spouse to a lavish cultural feast at Sabarmati Ashram before holding talks in the capital Delhi. This time around also, cultural and hometown diplomacy will set the tone for their wide-ranging talks in Beijing. The agenda is expected to be multi-layered, with business and economic issues competing with strategic talks focusing on the boundary question and peace and stability in the Asian hemisphere and beyond. Building trust will be the operative mantra. The two leaders are expected to focus on buttressing mechanisms on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the un-demarcated frontier. The overarching focus will be on imparting a new dynamism and long-term direction to expanding economic ties. Bilateral trade has exceeded $70 billion and the two countries are looking to scale it up to $100 billion soon in 2015. But with trade deficit ballooning, India is hoping that China will grant market access to Indian companies in diverse areas, including IT, pharma and food processing, among others. With PM Modi determined to make and re-make India into a developed country, one can expect the Indian leader to rope in China as a partner in his Make in India mission. China has responded with enthusiasm, and is looking to pump in around $20 billion investment into India’s infrastructure sector. China has already begun preparatory work on industrial parks in Maharashtra and Gujarat and is set to provide its expertise in upgrading Indian Railways. Looking ahead, the focus will be more and more on synergies and complementarities. If China has proven strengths in hardware, which can help India in bolstering infrastructure and its manufacturing sector, India is known for its software prowess that can help Chinese companies to become more efficient and competitive. This win-win formula looks set to define the future trajectory of India-China relations. Cultural diplomacy is set to make this future more appetising – yoga and Tai-Chi, travel and tourism will keep the relations fit and sparkling. Bollywood bonding is becoming stronger, with the two countries looking to jointly produce films. And PM Modi’s address to the Indian diaspora in Shanghai will highlight their role as bridge-builders. A journey of a thousand miles, as a Chinese proverb says, begin with a small step. The two Asian giants have gone beyond inches and are now making rapid strides to clock MILES, what PM Modi has famously called Millennium of Exceptional Synergy as they walk hand-in-hand in the unfolding journey of an Asian century. This is, after all, the journey of two and a half billion people and their soaring dreams.

In early April 2011, five Hong Kong families and their kids aged 6 to 15 years old decided to take their learning beyond the classroom and be a part of an outreach trip to visit a Save the Children's project school in Long Bin Village, Yunnan, China. During the 4-day visit, these kids had an opportunity not only to understand Save the Children's work in helping vulnerable children in China, but also to study, learn and play alongside the local students. They created artwork and paintings with their new friends and even renovated a classroom by painting the walls and new furniture. The children also participated in home visits and experienced first-hand life in a rural community.

Some people argue that the global balance of power is shifting away from the North Atlantic and toward the Asia-Pacific as countries such as India and China gain in economic , military, and political might. The two Asian powerhouses may appear to be developing new international systems – for example, through the AIIB – that could threaten the post-war order developed by the United States and Western Europe. However, long-simmering tensions between India and China, arguably increasing in the face of Chinese-Pakistan nuclear cooperation, and Indian anxiety over China’s actions in the South China Sea, among other issues, make it clear that China and India do not form a united bloc, and present an opportunity for the United States to play a role in re-shaping the balance of power throughout the world. Given the considerable differences arising between New Delhi and Beijing, and the fact that each country confronts enormous domestic issues including poverty, corruption, and environmental degradation on a huge scale, how can the United States manage the two rising Asian powers? For the third installment of our 50th Anniversary series, China and the World, Ms. Anja Manuel, author of This Brave New World: India, China and the United States, described the Sino-Indian relationship and the role the United States may play in creating a new balance of power with both India and China, with the National Committee on Monday, May 9, 2016 in New York City. Ms. Anja Manuel is co-founder and partner, along with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, of RiceHadleyGates LLC, a strategic consulting firm. Anja Manuel is also a lecturer in the International Policy Studies Program at Stanford University where she designed and teaches a course on U.S. foreign policy in Asia. From 2005 to 2007, Anja Manuel served as special assistant to Under-Secretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns at the U.S. Department of State. In this role, Ms. Manuel was responsible for South Asia policy, Congressional outreach and legal matters. She was part of the negotiating team for the U.S.-India civilian nuclear accord, helped to secure passage of the accord in the U.S. Congress, and was deeply involved in developing U.S. policy toward Afghanistan and Pakistan. From 2001 to 2005, and again from 2007 to 2009, Ms. Manuel was an attorney at the WilmerHale law firm, specializing in international litigation and arbitration, anti-corruption matters, and Congressional investigations, including in China, India, Latin America, and Africa. She helped represent Senators McCain and Feingold in their defense of the bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act before the Supreme Court; and represented the German Economy Foundation Initiative in its efforts to set up a foundation to compensate forced labor victims of World War II. She graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School, and holds a BA and MA degree with distinction from Stanford University. Ms. Manuel serves on the board of advisors for Ripple, Inc. and Flexport, Inc., a California company working to simplify the export-import process in the United States. She is also a board director for Internews, a non-profit that trains independent journalists in post-conflict and other developing countries. She is an advisory board member of the Center for a New American Security, the non-profit Developments in Literacy, and was a board director of Zipcourt, Inc. Ms. Manuel is a member of the Aspen India Strategy Group, and the Council on Foreign Relations. The National Committee's China and the World Series is sponsored by Dorsey & Whitney LLP.
